Novak Djokovic overcame “an incredible fight” with Taylor Fritz on Saturday, pushing through physical discomfort to reach the Shanghai Masters final, where he will face world number one Jannik Sinner in pursuit of his 100th career title.
Djokovic defeated Fritz 6-4, 7-6 (8/6), after Sinner had secured his spot by beating Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5, ensuring that Sinner will finish the year ranked at the top.
Only Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) have previously surpassed the 100-title milestone in men’s tennis.
“I won’t be the favorite on the court, but I hope to come out physically fresh enough to challenge him in what could be a long match.
“I expect it to be the toughest encounter of the tournament, and I must be prepared,” Djokovic noted regarding Sunday’s final.
Sinner remarked that facing Djokovic would make the final “even more special.” “It’s going to be a very tough match; it’s one of the biggest challenges we face in our sport,” he said.
