ABUJA – The House of Representatives has deferred debate on the constitutionality of deploying military personnel for election duties.
The motion, which was sponsored by the Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, (Lagos-APC) last week, was referred to three committees for advice by the Speaker, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.
The Committees are those for Rules and Business, Judiciary and Justice.
The motion was listed as one of the legislative businesses of the day but was not taken during the sitting of the House.
The Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Rep. Albert Sam-Tsokwa (PDP-Taraba), ?said that the chairmen of the three committees were yet to reach consensus.
Rep. Tsokwa, therefore, asked the members to grant them more days to report back on the matter.
The reports state that Sam-Tsoka’s response did not go down well with some of the members.
The Deputy Speaker, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, who presided over the sitting acceded to the request of the three committees for more days to agree on a common stand on the matter.
Reports state also that the House went into a close-door meeting shortly after reconvening for the day’s assignment.
At the end of the executive session which lasted about one hour, Ihedioha said that the 2015 Budget was discussed.
Meanwhile, Rep. Abayomi Kako-Are (APC-Lagos) announced on the floor of the House his defection to the Accord Party.
