BENIN CITY – The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Benin (UNIBEN) Chapter, Dr. Iyasele Julius said the just concluded general election was the last civil war fought in the ballot box.
He made this know while delivering a lecture titled: “Nigeria in post 2015 presidential election” at the annual get together and re-union party for “The Achievers”, class of International Studies and Diplomacy of UNIBEN 2007/2008, academic year.
Dr. Iyasele who was a guest speaker at the event x-rayed the role played by ethnicity and religion in Nigeria politics since 1960, the challenges faced as a nation, especially after the conduct of the 2015 general elections and what should be done not to return to regional government.
“On like before, religion and ethnicity has taken the front burner in Nigerian politics and difficult to separate Nigerian politics from these two element”.
Speaking further, he said the Nigerian Civil War broke out as a result of the killings of the Igbos’ in the North while the Yorubas’ played a traditional role in the battle.
On the disintegration of Nigeria into regions, Dr. Iyasele said in terms of development, “we would have improved tremendously compared to where we are currently.
“The only thing that would frustrate our return to regional government is accurate governance from the in-coming administration and physical and positive changes, not only in the nation but also in the lives of every Nigerians”, he concluded.
The president of the group, “The Achievers” class of International Studies and Diplomacy 2007/2008 academic session, Comrade Osamuyi Eyemwonmwen appreciated members for given effect to the event.
He said the group was set the pace that have created room for lectures to hold the group in high esteem.
Speaking further, he said Nigeria just came out from an election, therefore necessitating the lecture topic, “knowing we have embraced change and to see how this change will affect he social-economic and political life of our nation’s history”.
