BENIN CITY- As part of activities marking this year’s World Glaucoma Week, the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), Edo State Chapter has conducted free glaucoma eye test for residents across the state.

The 2020 World Glaucoma Week which started March 8, climaxed on March 14, as about 120 officers and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps benefited from the NOA glaucoma test.

Addressing Journalists earlier in Benin City, the State Chairman of NOA, Dr. Joe Owie said that the event was celebrated globally in the second week of March every year, to create awareness, detection and management of glaucoma.

He disclosed that NOA in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Edo State Command decided to organise the free glaucoma screening exercise for staff and members of the FRSC in Benin City

He added that optometrists in the state also offered free consultation and screening to members of the public at their respective facilities.

Dr. Owie expressed his association’s gratitude and appreciation to the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki for the intake of 10 optometry interns into the state Hospital Management Board (HMB), just as he appealed to the Govermor to increase the quota of the interns and employ more Optometrists into the state health improvement centres as well as the secondary levels of care in Edo State.

While facilitating with the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. (Mrs.) Lilian Imuetinyan Salami, Owie, however, sued for partnership between the Universit’s authorities and NOA.

He, therefore, reiterated his leadership’s commitment to zero tolerance for quacks and quackery in Optometric practice, warning that anyone found wanting would face the full wrath of the law.
