Officials of the Edo State Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) have apprehended a commercial bus driver in the Benin metropolis for driving against traffic (one-way).

The PUWOV State Coordinator, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, while reacting to a video on social media of the traffic offender, said the commercial bus driver has been apprehended and is facing prosecution in accordance with the state’s extant laws.

According to him, “Officials of PUWOV have apprehended a commercial bus driver in the Benin metropolis who was driving against traffic posing a threat to the lives of other road users. The driver is currently facing prosecution in accordance with the state’s extant laws, while the vehicle has been impounded.”

Describing as worrisome the frequent disregard to traffic rules and regulations by motorists in the state, the PUWOV Coordinator noted, “It is quite worrisome that despite the efforts by the state government to ensure the free flow of traffic, some recalcitrant motorists, especially commercial bus drivers have sustained the habit of driving against traffic, disobeying all road signs and signals in contravention of the of the state’s traffic laws.

“The government has stepped up enforcement to clampdown on these unruly motorists and will ensure that they are apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law. We, therefore, urge all motorists, including commercial bus drivers and private car owners to desist henceforth from flouting the state’s traffic laws and driving against traffic (one-way) or risk arrest and impoundment of their vehicles.

He further charged, “Motorists must be cautious, patient and obey all traffic signs so that incidents of accidents and traffic gridlock will be considerably reduced especially as the festive season nears.”
