The recent surge in cases of indecent practice among teenagers, particularly students in schools, has raised concerns among critical stakeholders and parents. During a recent summit held in Benin City, the practice of certain indecent behaviors common among students was strongly condemned.
Key authorities and parents were urged to take decisive actions to tackle this growing trend, especially among teenagers in boarding schools. The decline in moral values, which continues to dominate public discourse, must be given adequate attention.
To combat various indecent practices, including the rising cases of homosexuality among teenage students, there is a call for the enactment and enforcement of effective legislation against such behaviors. These legislations should include stiffer punitive measures to discourage youth involvement in these morally offensive practices, which are gradually eroding the foundation of moral values of the society.
However, the events of February 14, 2012, at Eucharistic Heart of Jesus School serve as a clear reminder of the consequences of such behavior from an objective point eview.
Two boarding students, Monday Osarenkho and Bright Odion, were reportedly caught engaging in homosexual acts within the school premises and subjected to merciless torture by fellow students before the arrival of security personnel.
However, due the late arrival of the police, Monday Osarekho managed to escape from the angry crowd, while Bright Odion was handed over to the school authorities.
As immoral acts by teenage students are strongly condemned, there should be no tolerance for those involved in the sacrilegious practice of homosexuality.
Stiffer punitive measures, as outlined in effective legislation, must be rigorously enforced to deter anyone tempted to engage in such practices, which are against cultural and traditional norms and values in Nigeria.
Consequently, as stakeholders continue their efforts to eliminate agents of these sacrilegious practices from society, it is expected that law enforcement agencies will intensify their efforts to locate and apprehend Monday Osarekho, who has been declared wanted for his unlawful desecration and participation in homosexuality, while Bright Odion undergoes legal prosecution.
