ABUJA – The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring quality teaching and learning, stressing that education was critical to Nigeria’s future.
Shekarau was quoted as saying this in the National Universities Commission (NUC’s) weekly bulletin, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Abuja.
The minister, who participated in the 2015 Education World Forum (EWF) in London recently, said the education sector was being revamped by the present administration.
“The current administration has made funds available to tertiary institutions across all levels to cater for the needed infrastructure and facilities that would enhance the teaching and learning processes.
“Education is the core of the transformation agenda and access and quality are the key goals of the education sector.
“The quality of teachers has fallen over the years as a result of the challenge of attracting best brains into the profession.
“Most teachers at the basic education level take the profession as transit points while awaiting better opportunities.’’
Shekarau further said that the Federal Government was addressing the challenges of low quality of teachers by paying priority attention to the profession which had suffered neglect in the past.
