IBADAN – Prof. Segun Ajiboye, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI), yesterday commended President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting the verdict of the outcome of the presidential election.
Ajiboye told journalists in Ibadan that the character of statesmanship exhibited by Jonathan was uncommon of the African people.
“We just want to congratulate Nigeria and Nigerians for the struggle and the experience of the people in the just-concluded presidential election,’’ he said.
The chairman said that Nigerians, based on their convictions, voted for a leader that could turn around the country for good.
The ASUU boss added that the union was looking forward to a new Nigeria, where education would be given upmost priority and huge investment.
Dr Ademola Aremu, the National Treasurer, ASUU, said the foundation for credible elections had been laid.
Aremu said that the fear of the electorate would now be the beginning of wisdom for politicians in the country.
“The new leadership must realise that serving the nation must be a priority,’’ he said.
He said that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari won based on his antecedents and must ensure that education was given huge investment in the country.
Meanwhile, a socio-cultural group, the Yoruba Youth Congress (YYC), had also congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for a job well done.
The National Leader of the group, Mr Olalekan Hammed, said Jega played the role of an electoral umpire without bias.
He, however, urged the president-elect to pursue the fight against corruption and to give room for youth participation in his administration.
