BENIN CITY- The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has called for the speedy passage of the administration of the criminal justice law (an act of Federal Parliament) as will be applicable to Edo State.
The NBA made the call on Tuesday, 21 October, 2015 when the body visited the speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Victor Edoror on the urgency required to pass the bill.
Speaking, Bar. Collins Okeke, the Spokesperson for the group, said the Bill, if passed, will make the criminal justice administration in Edo State to be in tandem with the national criminal justice act and it will fast track the criminal justice administration in Edo State. Mr. Collins emphasised on the need for Edo State House of Assembly to pass the bill as stakeholders like the police department, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the customs department, etc are already looking forward to the passage of the Bill as it has already been passed at the national level.
In his response, the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Sabor Edoror thanked the members of the NBA for their effort in drawing the attention of the legislators to the bill and added that the reason why the legislators are in the House of Assembly, is to legislate and as the representatives of the people, the end product of their process, the laws so made, must be in the interest of the people. The Speaker also added that, in as much as the bill has been passed at the national level, the members of Edo 6th Assembly will study the bill to ensure that its passage will be in the interest of the general public in Edo State.
