Abuja – The House of Representatives, on Thursday mandated its committee on Public Safety and Intelligence to investigate the arrest of Mr Michael UgoChinyere, President, National Youth Council of Nigeria by Department of State Security (DSS).

This followed a motion under matters of public importance by Hon. Goodluck Opiah (Imo State), which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.

Moving the motion, Opiah noted that his arrest was alleged to be because of his opinion expressed on television interview on the trial of the Senate President.

According to Opiah, Section 39 of the 1999 constitution as amended by the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the freedom of opinions of all Nigerians including Mr Michael Ugo Chinyere.

“Section 35 of 1999 constitution as amended further guarantees the personal liberty of Mr UgoChinyere and worried that he has been held for more than 14 hours by DSS.

“If no action is taken, the rights of Nigerians will continue to be infringed upon by our security agencies,’’ he said.

The house therefore, notified the DSS to release the President of the Youth Council of Nigeria or come out publicly to explain the alleged offence committed by him.
