The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Tuesday said that the delay in conducting the local government election was due to the inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update the voter register in the state.
Prof. Stanley Orobotor, a commissioner in EDSIEC who spoke on behalf of the commission made this known when he briefed the Edo House of Assembly on why EDSIEC has not been able to conduct local government election in the state.
Orobotor said “We are fully aware of our responsibilities. We are waiting for INEC to update the voter register and put the card readers in good condition so that nobody will be left out.
“These are the two things that have held us from conducting the local government election,” Orobotor said.
The speaker, Victor Edoror, thereafter urged EDSIEC to as a matter of urgency  liase with INEC to update the voter register to conduct a credible election in the state.
reports that the tenure of the local government chairmen would expire on Thursday, April 21, 2016.
The house had summoned the management of EDSIEC to explain why it has not been able to conduct local government election 90 days before the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent chairmen.
