FUGAR – The plague of cultism that has been ravaging the country reared its ugly head recently in Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State as a father and his son were reportedly killed in cult fracas involving two ruthlessly notorious cult groups (names withheld).
The man, simply identified as Mr Achief was said to have been shot dead in his house by suspected cultists allegedly on a revenge mission after one of their members died in the hospital from injuries sustained at the hands of one of the sons of the deceased by name Jude Achief.
According to our investigation, about a month ago, the deceased father had lost his son Fred Achief to suspected cultists who murdered him over a love affair with a young girl simply identified as Joy.
According to a source that pleaded anonymity, problems started when two rival cultists one of which was the said Fred Achief, started competing for the attention of one girl.
After several unheeded warnings, the said Fred Achief was killed by members of the opposite cult.
The source further revealed that about a month after the gruesome killing of Fred Achief, his identical twin brother who was a witness to his brother’s killing and saw and identified one of his brother’s killers, took the law into his hands following the failure of the police to apprehend the killers, and allegedly hit him on the head. The young man was said to have died later in the hospital.
“Members of the rival cult groups mobilized themselves and stormed the family house of the Achiefs in hot pursuit of Jude Achief, on getting there, Jude Achief has escaped and they allegedly shot the father dead on the head while vowing to hunt down Jude Achief and eliminate him”, the source said.
The menace of cultism in our nation has assumed a frightening dimension as young able bodied boys continue to be killed and maimed by cult related violence.
The law enforcement agencies appear inept or outrightly complicit in the spread of cultism and the accompanying violence as many law enforcement agents belong to one cult group or the other.
This bloodshed cannot continue or there will be a complete breakdown of law and other and we will return to the Hobbesian state of nature where life was solitary, brutish, nasty and short.
As at press time, the whereabouts of the said Jude Achief has not yet be ascertained as no one has seen or heard from him .
