BENIN-CITY – The Police authorities in Benin City, Edo State have spread their dragnet to the outskirts of Benin City in search of members of gay syndicate who are presently on the run after the Police stormed their hideout in Ogiafa Street, Off Mission Road in Benin few days ago.

Also in the spotlight is one Solomon Ani, a suspected accomplice, believed to be harbouring and providing cover for members of the syndicate.

It was gathered that personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) had at the weekend, based on a tip-off stormed the house at Ogiafa Street and arrested a middle age man, simply identified as Lucky, an Assistant Manager in one of the petrol stations in the area after his gay partner, Kelvin Osawaru, on sighting the Police escaped through the window and has since not been seen.

They were said to be engaged in same-sex act at the time the Police personnel stormed the area.

Kelvin, a fashion designer, it was gathered was notorious for same-sex relationship and security operatives have kept close watch on him over time

He was said to be a major promoter of same-sex relationship, even among young girls in and around Benin City metropolis.

However, the Police authorities declined to make any official statement, saying it could undermine their investigation.

It would be recalled that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan had on January 7, 2014 signed into law, the Same Sex Prohibition Act (SSPA).

With the coming into effect of the act, it therefore became an offence for anyone, male or female to engage in same-sex act, operate, promote and or sponsor homosexual clubs, association or meetings.

The law prescribes between 10 – 14 years jail term for anyone who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organisation or supports activities of such organisation.
