BENIN CITY- Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki has rewarded two pupils in the state with one hundred thousand naira each for coming out first in the South-South regional Lafarge Africa literacy competition held in Port-Harcourt River State.

The two pupils rewarded for excelling in the literary competition are Master Yusuf Hassan from Esonnerie Primary School in Oredo Local Government area and Miss Faith Toun-Agbai of Eguware Primary School in Irrua, Esan Central local government area of the state.

  Congratulating the winners, Governor Godwin Obaseki said the state is blessed and endoured with intelligent and smart children and his administration is already creating a supportive environment for the children to express themselves and become great leaders who can help transform the society.

“This will not be possible if government does not support these children by providing infrastructure in their school and provide a better curriculum as well as the enabling environment, nurture and mentor them to achieve their aim in life. Some of us are successful today because we received such support in our time”.

Obaseki said the determination to reposition the education sector has led to the restructuring of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and will make more funding available for basic education to restructure the curriculum, support the teachers to be able to pass on learning properly to the children.

“In years to come our children that go through our basic education system would become more endowed and supported by the system to make them useful people in our society. We want to make sure we equip our children at the basic stage of their life with proper high quality education and good quality healthcare”.

Earlier, the leader of delegation and Special Advise on basic education and sole Administrator of SUBEB Joane Osa-Oviawe thanked the governor for creating time to meet with the award winners. She said Faith and Hassan has excelled by coming out first in the South-South regional Lafarge Africa literacy competition and are here to present the certificate they won to the governor.

“From here, the kids are moving to Lagos for the national competition to be held on 16th of November 2017. For coming first in the competition they have been given a scholarship of one hundred thousand naira. Last year our pupils from Idia and Emotan Primary school were winners of the competition in South-South. Our goal this year is to emerge first in the nation in line with your vision for basic education in the state”.

Responding master Yusuf Hassan Esonnerie Primary School thanked the governor for the financial reward for their performance promising to put in his best to come out winner in Lagos at the national competition. He also thanked his school and teachers for the knowledge that has made him come out victorious in the South-South competition.
