It was gathered that the said Ibrahim Olaide Onibiyo who died on November 9th, 2019 belonged to LGBTQ+ group an allegation he has constantly denied when confronted on several occasion by youths in the area after his elder brother Adetunji Onibiyo escaped arrest when police raided their apartment in Bariga area of Lagos State following an alleged involvement in homosexaul activities.
Before his death, late Ibrahim Olaide Onibiyo confessed that his elder brother, Adetunji Ismail Onibiyo who is a banker in one of the new generation bank introduced him to homosexuality while staying with him at No 13 Olawale Lawal street in Bariga area of Lagos State.
He said he continued the life of gay under the tutelage of his elder brother who kept protecting him and concealing his sexual identity using his connections and finance as a banker. He added that after his brother was implicated as the financier and secretary of the group and his sexual identity revealed, he escaped arrest while no one suspected him as he continued the act before been caught.
It was gathered that youths in the area are on the lookout for people practising Gay, Lesbianism, Bisexual, Transgender or any members of LGBTQ+ as it is said that living with them in the same community has brought bad omen to the community. All government agents and authorities are in the watch to flush them out from the area.
Report had it that about five elders of the community have been invited by the police for questioning to explain their roles in the murder of the young man identified as Ibrahim, as the law is against jungle justice but also reserves punishment for offenders of gays, lesbians, bisexual and same sex marriage with a 14 years jail term if found guilty.
Explaining his role in the killing of Ibrahim Onibiyo, Mr. Lasisi Bamidele (45), the father of six, with a twin, said he didn’t participate in beaten the accused which led to his death, but just watched while others inflicted bodily injury on him. He noted that he has already given the police the names of some persons he recognised in the scene and other vital information that will help them with their investigation. He however appealed to the police authority to release him for he is innocent.
He however frown at the increase practise of homosexuality in their community, which the culture, customs and tradition forbids and constant practise of it has desecrated the land and bring bad omen to the people.
“Prosperity, peace and progress has eluded us, it’s only sickness, out break of strange illness which had defiled cure but have killed over 11 persons both old and young in the community.. These situations led to consultation of the gods that pointed to the abominable acts in the land. Despite the hospitality of this community, accommodating all tribes, Lagosians and none Lagosians alike should not take the community for granted as we will not allow the desecration of our values, customs and tradition in the name of modernisation.
“This led us to taking the action we took in flushing out anyone or group of people with homosexual behaviour or linked to any of their activities or use this place as a vital ground to promote their fraternization or any other social vices and nefarious activities that is forbidden in this land including cultism.
“It’s like the Onibiyo’s family are cursed, first its the eldest son of the family Mr. Adetunji Ismail Onibiyo, a banker and a devoted Christian by religion who was first accused. He was discovered to be homosexual and said he finance the activities of LGBTQ+ group in this area and connects members to rich and influential personalities including politicians.
“The police followed this information to invite him for questioning on three different occasion but he never honoured their invitation, even when the family advised him to do. They invaded his apartment to arrest him but he got wind of the information and fled to an undisclosed location. We are yet to hear from him ever since.
“His involvement brought shame to this community and the police was informed but did nothing to curtail the menace of their activities and as we were about to take laws into our hands he escaped to an undisclosed location. Since his escape three of their members have been arrested and they have confessed that he is the sponsor of the movement and activities in Lagos state.
“The president, Mr. Rueben Ayodele of the LGBTQ+ group in Bariga also escaped from police custody after his arrest last month (October 2019) on homosexual issues”.
Bamidele said critics has expressed dissatisfaction on how police has been handling Rueben Ayodele’s case in his involvement in homosexuality as it might have compromised his escape as he is still wanted by the police according to police source.
“It had also been confirmed by other gay arrested that Mr. Adetunji Ismail Onibiyo, is financially buoyant and use his financial contact and influence to promote the activities of LGBTQ+ in this community. Am sure he will continue this shameful and abominable act anywhere he is. Now we are talking about his younger brother’s involvement in the shameful act of homosexuality, are they the only family here?
A spokes man for the family, Pa Akintunde Onibiyo who spoke to our Crime reporter said he is speaking with shame as the family are known to be devoted Christians and doesn’t engage in what will rubbish their religion and family name but can’t explain what is happening.
“We find it difficult to believe that our son Adetunji is homosexual. As we still struggle to come to terms with that, another son Ibrahim involved again. We are not the only family in this area. These children are well raised. Adetunji is a graduate of accounting from a reputable institution in Lagos State and work as a successful banker for about 12 years, why will he mess up himself? . For Ibrahim a fine gentleman destroyed his life, and send himself to untimely death with this abominable act. It’s painful for the family, and there are questions we find difficult to answer”.
