BENIN CITY- The last may not have been heard about a young Benin man who was alleged to have killed another young man in a scuffle from matrimonial crisis involving his own sister and her husband’s mother.
The young man Uyinmwen Peter who has been in detention for the past 12 years, escaped amongst others when the Oko prison was broken and all inmates freed during the recent ‘EndSARS’ protest that rocked almost all parts of the country recently.
Although a handful of the inmates who escaped after forcefully freed, voluntarily returned back to the correctional facility. While some have also been rearrested from various parts of the country.
More worrisome are the dare-devil criminals, already convicted and awaiting trials from criminal acts like murder, kidnapping and armed robbery.
The Federal Ministry of Interior is still busy trying to compile and come out with a comprehensive list of prison and police cells inmates that escaped all over the country during the unavoidable crisis particularly in Edo state that was worse hit.
All appeal and stern warnings by the state government and the executive governor of Edo state, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki to the escaped inmates to return back to the facilities was not yielded to. Even the encouraging speech that the first set of hundred inmates to return back voluntarily would have their terms, conditions and cases reviewed, did not help matters, as only very few close to their discharge responded.
However, a particular Muslim family in Benin city have vowed to get the person, Uyinmwen Peter, who killed their own brother and peter’s sister, Uyinmwen Joy who caused the fight that led to the death of their Muslim brother, dead or alive, anywhere they are found in the country.
It will be recalled that about 12 years ago a fracas ensued from a matrimonial issues where the Muslim mother in-law based in Lagos vehemently refused her Muslim son marrying a Christian woman.
The Muslim man got the Christian fiancée pregnanted, a responsibility he earlier denied, but later obliged. But after a while the daughter in-law was invited to their house in Lagos, where the mother still angrily insisted against the marriage.
According to a very reliable source, after both of them returned back to Benin where they are based, the man’s mother came down from Lagos with anger, she violently attacked the pregnant lady Uyinmwen Joy, pushed her down and hit her in the protruded belly with her leg. She then developed heremorrhage that resulted to loosing the baby through abortion to save her life as advised by the medical doctor.
In a second attempt, after discharged from the hospital, the angry mother in-law, still insisting that Joy must leave her son alone, came with some rugged boys, looking like thugs to attack the young lady, who was just recovering from abortion. This time, there was strong resistance by her brother, Uyinmwen Peter who was lucky to be present in the house. In the ensuing melee, he hit one of the thugs hard on the fore head with an object, that later led to his death, which equally led to his detention ever since.
After recovering to an extent from the effect of the abortion and nothing to fall on again, Uyinmwen Joy decided to pick up menial job in a bar to get the body and soul together.
But surprisingly, the family of the dead and his gang started trailing her looking for her head, until she disappeared from the bar she was working, when the pressure became too much unbearable and nowhere to hide.
Moreover, their blind mother died in 2014, in the wake of all the problems for lack of care. Since the only son Peter Uyinmwen is languishing in detention and her only daughter Joy too is nowhere to be found after losing her pregnancy and still under fire of living in perpetual fear and her where about unknown. Even as the thugs have vowed to get her by all means, because they can’t just loose their brother just like that without retaliating.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria and Edo State government have placed a handsome reward of ₦5m (Five million Naira) on any successful informant that can lead to the arrest of Uyinmwen Peter and all other inmates that escaped from various burnt and destroyed police stations and particularly the two prison yards in Benin City, Edo State.
