BENIN CITY-The France Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jerome Pasqvier, has commended the Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI), over its unprecedented fight against Human Trafficking and irregular migration in Nigeria.
Ambassador Pasqvier gave the commendation during his working visits to GPI Edo state office in Benin City yesterday.
“I am very happy with what GPI is doing in the area fighting human trafficking and irregular migration and we are happy to be able to support GPI in its activities.
“Controlling human trafficking is difficult and it must be done collectively and we will work with you (GPI) and Government to fight human trafficking.
“We are aware that poverty is one of the reasons people are being trafficked and we will work with the State government for the creations of jobs for Ecomomy development because, fighting Trafficking is huge task.
Briefing the France Ambassador earlier, the Coordinator of Girls’ power initiative, Mrs. May Ekido, said GPI have been involved in prevention of human trafficking and economics strengthening and reintegration of returned migrants over 27 years.
“In prevention of human trafficking, we go to schools, communities and markets to carry out awarness campaigns, hold Town Hall meetings with people on the ills involve in human trafficking.
“We also involve ourselves in Economy strengthened and reintegration of returned migrants and in GPI we have numerous works that we. In our Social Demographic Fund Project, we gave scholarship to 50 Students”, she disclosed
The GPI Coordinator while enumerating various projects and interventions embarked on by the NGO said that the ”Don’t Pay with your life Project” is geared towards the prevention of human trafficking.
“In this project, we go to schools to create awareness and sensitization and our target are Edo Central and North Senatorial Districts.
“We have a space to reintegrate 50 returners which we are working directly with National Agency for prohibition of Trafficking in persons (NAPTIP), she said
She, however, appealed to Edo State Government to support activities of NGOs in the state, just as she commended Ecpat France, Ecpat Luxembourg, Air France and other private donors.
