In a world that often struggles to embrace diversity and personal choices, Saheed Oluwatobi Abdul’s story is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by individuals who dare to be true to themselves.
On May 24, 2022, Saheed’s life took an unexpected turn when he attended a party with his partner Faruq Afolabi, in Ugbor GRA, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, Saheed’s world was upended when the police raided the gathering under suspicions of being a gay event. In a desperate bid to escape persecution, he fled, while his partner, Faruq, and 5 others were arrested.
And during interrogation by the police, illicit and abominable sexual acts of him and Saheed were found both in pictures and in videos.
Faruq’s arrest was not just a stark reminder of Nigeria’s harsh stance on LGBTQ+ rights, but it also brought back memories of their enduring friendship. Saheed and Faruq’s bond had been formed in the crucible of adversity, as they both endured bullying for their friendships with girls during their formative years. This shared experience of social exclusion further cemented their connection, leading them to share their most intimate selves with each other.
The events of that ill-fated party ultimately forced Saheed into hiding. Knowing too well that Faruq’ were in the Custody of the police and that he will be interrogated and also understood the consequences behind the act. If found guilty by the law.
While Saheed’s story is just one of countless narratives, it serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, and a call for societies to evolve towards acceptance, compassion, and respect for all.
