Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has been lauded for the sustained efforts of his administration in promoting and supporting the growth of sports in the state.

The principal of Zappa Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, Ogbokor Roseline, gave the commendation in Asaba during the 7th Annual Inter-House Sports Competition of the school.

She also said that the state government had recorded monumental achievements in its commitment to drive the education system in the state to enviable heights.

Ogbokor said that sports are an integral part of formal education, adding that sporting activities enhance intellectual development and inculcate moral and social values in students

She said that the role of sports in the school system was enormous, stressing that sports helped in skill acquisition, psychological development and emotional wellness.

Ogbokor stated that it was important for children to engage in sports and channel their youthful energy positively to enhance their physical and intellectual development, adding that it was a tool for developing healthy competition, mutual understanding and unity.

She listed the immediate needs of the school to include school band, more security guards, a ceremonial uniform for outing, especially for Children’s Day and Independence Day celebrations as well as a galvanized room where documents and statistical records could be kept.

The principal also thanked the teachers for their ceaseless commitments in making the 7th Annual Inter House Sports Competition a success.

Earlier in her remarks, the pioneer principal of the school, Okwuone Patience Nkechi, said that sports help to develop individuals mentally, physically, emotionally and socially.

Okwuone, a retired principal and now the Proprietress of Magnificent Bethel International School, stressed the need to catch them young and stated that the children should continue to train hard to attain effectiveness in sporting activities.

She noted that it was in recognition of the importance of sports that the state government made it compulsory at all levels of education, adding that the state government had performed exceedingly well in the education sector.

The event, under the chairmanship of Rev. Steve Edremoda of the Ministry of Lands and Surveys, was attended by the Chief Inspector of Education (CIE) in Oshimili South, Djoma Emiliana, and some principals, including the principals of Zappa Basic Secondary School, Godson Opone; Niger Mixed Secondary School, Aseyeni Benjamin,and Special Duties, Government Model Secondary School, Asaba who represented the principal of the school, Dr. Obiajulu Eboka, among other dignitaries.
