… as group advovates investments in community empowerment for lasting change

The Society to Heighten Awareness of Women and Children Abuse (SOTHAWACA) in collaboration with Voice of Women Radio (VOWR), has played host to a one-day stakeholders sensitization workshop, in commemorating the 16 Days of activism against Gender-Based Violence 2023, with the theme: Investing to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls.

Participants were urged to persist in the fight against gender-based violence,

Ronke Ojeikere, the Initiator of SOTHAWACA, emphasized the significance of economic empowerment as a potent tool in preventing violence against women and girls, advocating for investments in community empowerment initiatives for lasting change.

During the workshop that held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, there were paper presentations which concentrated on educating participants about the issues surrounding the battle against gender-based violence.

Delivering the first paper on “Peace and Security,” Barr. Agatha Osieke highlighted the importance of training women and girls as mediators, negotiators, and reconciliators, urging the government to adopt the United Nations Security Council Resolution document (UNSCR 1325).

On her part, Mrs. Blessing Eromon addressed participants on “Empowering Communities for Local Change,” emphasizing capacity building, partnership, and celebrating success as integral components of community empowerment. Stressing the need to address gender-based violence at the community level, she underscored the importance of getting it right to prevent further cases.

Participants recognized and praised the proactive efforts of H.E. Dr. (Mrs.) Betsy Obaseki, which has resulted in heightened awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) issues and increased government engagement. They commended the organizers of the workshop and emphasized the importance of ongoing advocacy against GBV.

The 16 Days of Activism on the Elimination of Gender-Based Violence, observed annually from November 25 to December 10, serves as a campaign to raise awareness, challenge unjust attitudes, and call for enhanced legislation and services to end violence against women.
