The Federal Government has flagged off grants for vulnerable groups in Cross River State. Also, the Federal Government is to build low-cost houses for refugees in Ogoja and Obanliku Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Cross River State for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu made the disclosure when she, alongside Governor Bassey Otu, flagged off the Cross River version of the Grant’s for Vulnerable Groups in the state.
The minister said she was deeply touched when residents of Belegete and Okwa communities of the state were attacked by insurgents reportedly from neighbouring Cameroon Republic.
“I was moved when I saw crowds of our people from communities in Obanliku fleeing attacks from gangs from neighbouring country.
“As a result of influxes of refugees from Cameroon and Internally Displaced Persons from the two communities, we will build more houses to accommodate them,” the minister said.
She said by January 2024, the Federal Government will launch more poverty alleviating projects.
According to Edu, President Bola Tinubu’s government is determined to lift 50 million vulnerable Nigerians out of poverty through his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Governor Otu commended President Tinubu, saying, “We’ve never seen a government as caring as that of President Tinubu. The president has passion to impact the real people just as our government in Cross River.
“Tinubu’s government does not segregate. He has given the vulnerable people sense of belonging.”
