…urges partners to unite in the collective endeavour of creating a cancer-free world
In pursuit of increasing the awareness of cancer and its associated dangers, the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) in collaboration with healthcare vision minded Organisations on Monday celebrated “World Cancer Day 2024” in Benin City the Edo State capital.
Groups that joined forces with EDSPHCDA to celebrate the World Cancer Day include the World Health Organization (WHO), Breast Cancer Hub, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) Edo State Chapter, Fight Cancer Global, and Oke Creative Future Foundation
The theme of year 2024 celebration is “Close the Care Gap”; reflecting the collective commitment of the Agency and its partners in addressing gaps in cancer care.
Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen, the Executive Secretary, EDSPHCDA, commenced the press briefing by highlighting cancer as a generic term for a large group of diseases in which some body cells grow abnormally and spread to other parts of the body.
The Executive Secretary articulated that the aim of the celebration is to prevent millions of deaths annually by increasing awareness on cancer and its dangers while stressing the importance of early detection, treatment, and encouraging citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles as preventative measures.
Dr. Izedonmwen called upon Civil Society Advocates, Community and Religious Leaders, Corporate Organizations, Global Health Experts, and Government Representatives to unite in the collective endeavour of creating a cancer-free world.
Expressing deep appreciation, he acknowledged His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki for his revolutionary efforts in the primary healthcare sector. Governor Obaseki’s initiatives, including employment of health workers, training and retraining of health workers, and the revitalization of health centers have significantly contributed to the advancements in healthcare within the state.
Furthermore, Dr. Izedonmwen extended gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Health, WHO, and all partners for their unwavering support in the shared mission to close the care gap in cancer care.
The highlight of the day was a Road Walk, where the EDSPHCDA team, along with partners took a walk around the airport road and the ring road axis of Benin City spreading awareness on cancer.
