In a bid to revolutionise the civil and public service excellent service delivery by Governor Obaseki-led administration, the Odigie-Oyegun Public Service (JOOPSA) embarked on a transformative journey with the much-anticipated EDSG Competency Framework Workshop.

The workshop was held at the state-of-the-art JOOPSA Academy in Benin City. This session marked a pivotal moment in the organisation’s commitment to nurturing a highly skilled, competent, and innovative workforce that is ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century in Edo State.

Notably, a competency framework is a set of skills / tools for organisations to help align employee development with organisational goals, identify skill gaps, and support talent management processes including recruitment, performance management, and succession planning.

Imuwahen Ajoonu, the pioneering Director-General of JOOPSA said, “The state government recognizes the Civil and Public Service as the delivery engine of government and the most important institution affecting the lives of citizens.

“To ensure the engine of government operates as it should, the academy embarked on the retooling of the EDSG workforce stakeholders across all MDAs, and LGAs via Focus Group engagement to deliberate and galvanize best practices on competency framework formulation.”

She further expressed her unwavering commitment to the Edo state government in investing in the professional development of its workforce through various initiatives such as the EDSG Competency Framework Training.

The JOOPSA DG added that Governor Obaseki recognises that the most valuable asset in excellent service delivery is the Edo State’s workforce. By equipping and retooling the Edo workforce with the skills, knowledge, and competencies outlined in the EDSG Competency Framework, the Obaseki’s administration is laying the foundation for a more responsive, efficient, and accountable public service across all cadres.

A group of selected employees from different cadres, MDAs, and LGAs in Edo State participated in the EDSG Competency Framework workshop.

The workshop programme was facilitated by renowned expert from Development Alternative Incorporated (DAI), Ovota Iyamu, and covered several topics. These topics included leadership and communication skills, as well as technical competencies tailored to specific jobs and functions within the service.

The participants of the EDSG Competency Framework workshop praised the event as a transformative learning experience. They felt empowered to excel in their respective roles and contribute meaningfully to EDSG’s overarching mission of service excellence delivery and Make Edo Great Again (MEGA) Agenda.

Samuel Omobu, a Senior Civil Servant of EDSG, shared his experience noting that the training equipped him with practical tools and strategies to enhance his leadership managerial, and communication skills. He also stated that he was inspired and motivated, and ready to apply what he learned to drive positive change within his department and beyond.
