The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.Blessing Agbebaku has said that the decision to serve an impeachment notice on the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu was a unanimous decision reached by 21 out of 24 members of the state assembly.
Rt.Hon.Agbebaku made the disclosure when he received members of the Catholic Men Organizations of Nigeria, Benin Province who were are on reconciliatory move to intervene in the impeachment process against the deputy governor.
He thanked the members of the organization for the peace move but stressed that the decision reached by the house to serve the impeachment rest squarely on the all 24 members out of which 21 signed the notice.
He said, “I am the head in this assembly made up of 24 members. However, any decisions taken is what I follow.
“21 out of 24 signed and as servant of the other 23 members I do not have much to say.
“If there is ever going to be any resolution that would be determined by whatever the others agree on and not me.” Rt.Hon.Agbebaku added.
Earlier, Steven Adewale Apologun, Provisional President Catholic Men Organization of Nigeria, Benin Province speaking on behalf of the national leadership of the Catholic Lay groups in Nigeria, said the group acknowledged the legislative roles of members of the 8th assembly and its constitutional duties but appealed for caution to ensure that legislative responsibilities are not perceived as a political witch-hunt against the deputy governor in view of the political disagreement of the deputy governor against the governor.
He implored the speaker and other members of the 8th assembly to intervene in the peace and reconciliation initiative committee earlier constituted by the Archbishop of Benin Diocese Most Revd Dr. Augustine Akubeze in seeking reconciliation to the disagreement between the deputy governor and Governor Godwin Obaseki in the interest of peace.
