…as daughter continues mother’s legacy of care

Over 100 residents of Evbareke, a neighbourhood around Textile-Mill Road in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, have received free medical care in memory of Cecilia Ewemade Asoro, who passed away 28 years ago.

Beneficiaries received free medical checkups, including blood pressure and sugar level tests. Additionally, free drugs were provided to treat various ailments and complaints.

Dr. Ann Osamudiamen Asoro, the initiator of the programme and daughter of the late Cecilia Asoro, said she aims to keep her mother’s memory alive by continuing, through a larger outreach, her legacy of providing free medical and other essential services like midwifery to the underprivileged.

Late Cecilia Asoro, a trained nurse and midwife, dedicated her life to serving humanity through her work.

Dr. Asoro described her mother as a cheerful and kind-hearted woman who would have wanted her legacy to continue.

“She was a disciplinarian and a very good educationist; and a humanitarian too,” Dr. Asoro said. “My mum used to have a black handbag that was literally a mobile clinic. Anywhere she went and found out someone had a medical need, she offered assistance immediately free of charge.”

Dr. Asoro encouraged residents to take advantage of the free medical services and urged well-to-do Edo indigenes to give back to the community.

“Beyond celebrating the memory of my late mum, I see this as an opportunity to give back to my community by encouraging healthy living through these check ups,” she said.

Beneficiaries, including Joy James, expressed gratitude for the initiative, praying for continued grace of God upon Dr. Asoro so she can continue to offer free medical care to the people.

A grand reception was held at Dr. Asoro’s compound to celebrate with guests, friends, well-wishers and family members.

Some family members took the opportunity to share fond memories of their time with the late Cecilia Asoro when she was alive.
