19 Teams to Battle for Title
The 2nd edition of the Under-18 Oba of Benin Football Tournament, organized by the Edo State Football Association (Edo FA), is set to begin on Tuesday, December 10, in Edo State.
Sponsored by U.S.-based former footballer Michael Ogbebor, popularly known as “Obanta,” the tournament honors His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, as part of the annual Igue Festival celebrations.
During the draw, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Media Centre in Benin City, 19 teams were paired against one another. Speaking via telephone from New York, Ogbebor thanked the media, coaches, and stakeholders for their support and encouraged players to remain calm and fair throughout the tournament.
Ogbebor announced that winners and runners-up of the 2025 edition would have the opportunity to participate in tours to Denmark and Sweden, providing players with exposure to international football and motivation to excel.
Mrs. Vera Ogbebor, representing her husband at the draw, urged teams to play wholeheartedly, emphasizing that sincere performances would inspire further sponsorship.
The tournament format includes 13 teams on bye, while six teams will play in the first round to complete the Round of 16 lineup. Matches will be held at Crescent Sports Club Irhiri, with the grand finale set for December 26 (Boxing Day) at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Prominent Benin chiefs, dignitaries, and stakeholders are expected to attend the final match, adding grandeur to the event.
The prize pool includes ₦1.5 million for the champions, ₦750,000 for the runners-up, and ₦500,000 for the second runners-up. Additional awards for individual performances will also be presented.
Ogbebor, a former football defender, described the tournament as a way to give back to society and the sport that shaped his life. His journey began with Best Stars FC under coach Joseph Isokpehi before moving abroad, where he earned the nickname “The Boy is Good.”
The tournament celebrates the Oba of Benin’s rich cultural heritage while inspiring young football talents in Edo State.
