Supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio clashed at the National Assembly on Wednesday as protests over allegations of sexual harassment rocked the legislature.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters had gathered at the entrance of the National Assembly, demanding Akpabio’s resignation following allegations of misconduct against the Kogi Central lawmaker. The demonstrators, comprising civil society groups and concerned citizens, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Akpabio must go” and “We stand with Senator Natasha.”
The atmosphere grew more intense when Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived at the scene, receiving cheers from her supporters who reiterated their calls for a thorough investigation into the allegations.
In a counter-protest, Akpabio’s supporters, under the banner of United Women for Good Governance, staged a demonstration defending the Senate President. They carried placards with messages including “Apologise to the Senate President” and “We say no to Natasha’s serial blackmailing.” The group insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan should retract her accusations, arguing that Akpabio had always treated her as “a daughter and friend.”
Security operatives had earlier intervened to disperse Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters with tear gas at the National Assembly Arcade. Despite this, the protesters regrouped at the Unity Fountain, continuing their demonstration.
The protests have further intensified tensions within the Senate, with calls from both sides for decisive action on the allegations.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly leadership is yet to officially respond to the developments.
