The Edo State Government has partnered with the Women in Mining Association to promote sustainable practices and prioritise health and safety within the mining sector.
This was the focus of a one-day seminar held at the Ministry of Mining’s Conference Hall in Benin City.
Themed “Environmental Hazards in Mining Sites and Health Management for Miners,” the event brought together stakeholders, including Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, Commissioner for Mining; Mrs. Omoruyi Ese Martina, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry; officials from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals; geologists; and civil servants from relevant departments.
Commissioner Ijegbai lauded the initiative and pledged continued government support for women in the sector.
He emphasised the seminar as a platform to address key challenges and elevate mining standards across Edo State.
Mrs. Omoruyi praised Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, citing his approval of funds for safety kits and expanded oversight over mining sites.
She said that such actions demonstrate the state’s commitment to reducing risks and fostering responsible mining.
Chief Mrs. Omo Amadasun, National Financial Secretary of Women in Mining, advocated for prioritising miners’ health and safety over profit.
She emphasised the need for frequent medical check-ups, adequate site assessments, and improved regulation to prevent tragedies such as cave-ins.
The seminar also featured lectures on risk management and environmental safety, while Dr. Mrs. Joy Iyen Akhigbe, Permanent Secretary from the Head of Service’s office, challenged stakeholders on communication safety measures and regulatory enforcement.
Closing the event, Edo State Coordinator of Women in Mining, Mrs. Jennifer, expressed appreciation to the Ministry for its support and encouraged continued collaboration for safer mining practices.
