Amid possible fears of further break down of law and order in the state following the October 19th 2020 #ENDSARS jailbreak in the Benin and Oko prisons, renewed efforts have been intensified to re-arrest all fleeing inmates numbering a total of 1,993.
To this end, the ministry of Interior in conjunction with the Edo State government has issued a 1 week ultimatum to all fleeing inmates who escaped from prison custody to return or risk further sanctions when re-arrested.
The ministry in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City further disclosed that while it was doing everything possible within the ambit of the law to ensure national and local security was not undermined by the actions of the fleeing inmates, virtually all the cases involving some of the fleeing inmates either awaiting trials or already sentenced would need to be urgently reviewed with a view to re-arresting all the concerned inmates.
Meanwhile, the statement urged members of the public to co-operate with all the relevant security agencies including local vigilantes noting that anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing inmates should report at the nearest police station as such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
