On Tuesday, the Edo State government paid a condolence visit to the victims of the tragic accident involving Primary Healthcare staff in Esan West Local Government Area. The unfortunate incident, which took place on May 16, 2024, resulted in the hospitalization of four staff members and claimed the lives of Nurse Mary Oseikhuemen, her four-month-old baby and Mrs. Juliet Idialu, a Health Attendant in Esan West Local Government Area.
Representing the Edo State Head of Service, Barrister Anthony Okungbowa, the Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Human Resources Management, Mr. George Igberase, alongside the Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA), Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen, led a delegation to express their condolences and offer support.
The visit began at the Esan West Secretariat, where the delegation met with the council’s leadership, including the Chairman, Hon Collins Aigbogun ably represented by the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), Dr. Charles Okpere.
The team explained the purpose of their visit, hereafter the council leadership alongside the Medical Officer of Health for Esan West LGA, Dr. Aimua Ehijiele and other health workers at Esan West LGA as well as the State delegation proceeded to Irrua Specialist Hospital where they were received by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Reuben A. Eifediyi.
The Executive Secretary, EDSPHCDA Dr. Izedonmwen appreciated the CMD for taking care of the victims, and also appreciated the CMARK and other management that took care of the victims, reiterating government’s commitment to covering all medical expenses and providing necessary support during this difficult time.
The delegation led by Mr Igberase and Dr Izedonmwen were taken on a visit to the wards to see the accident victims. Two of the injured staff members had been discharged, while two others remained in intensive care.
Finally, the team visited the families of the deceased healthcare workers. The Permanent Secretary, Mr Igberase, assured the families that the state government would handle all hospital bills for the injured and ensure the entitlements of the deceased were promptly processed. He emphasized the government’s deep sympathy and commitment to standing by the families through their loss.
