Tensions flared in the Senate on Wednesday as some lawmakers protested a motion to suspend its rules to admit the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zaccheus Adedeji, and the Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, into the Red Chamber.
The suspension of rules allowed Adedeji and Oyedele to explain the Tax Reform Bill during plenary. However, their planned entry sparked protests from Senators Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) and Ali Ndume (Borno South), who objected to the Senate’s decision to pause its regular business to entertain the matter, despite its significance.
The Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over plenary, defended the Senate’s decision, dismissing the objections as unwarranted. The heated exchange showed the growing divisions within the Senate over the bill, which has garnered significant public attention for its potential economic implications.
The Tax Reform Bill, is a key legislative proposal aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s fiscal policies.
