BENIN CITY: The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning to all parties involved in the ongoing dispute over the traditional leadership of Okpella community, urging restraint and strict adherence to the rule of law.

In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Rt. Hon. Festus Ebea, the government cautioned against any form of self-help following a recent court ruling on the matter.

The statement noted that the State Attorney General had already initiated legal processes, including an appeal and a stay of execution, in response to the judgment.

According to the government, all parties are expected to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of the judicial process, warning that any attempt to forcefully assert authority or disrupt the traditional institution would not be tolerated.

“Any act of self-help, forceful takeover, intimidation, or disruption of the traditional institution in Okpella by any party whatsoever is illegal, intolerable, and will attract the full weight of the law,” the statement read.

The government further disclosed that security agencies have been placed on red alert to forestall any breakdown of law and order in the area.

It called on stakeholders, community members, and groups within Okpella to remain calm, avoid provocative actions, and allow the courts to determine the matter without interference.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Edo State Government will act decisively and without hesitation against anyone who attempts to interfere with public order or threaten the security and harmony of the community,” the statement added.
