President Bola Tinubu has transmitted a bill to the House of Representatives seeking to amend Nigeria’s law governing the transfer of convicted offenders between the country and foreign jurisdictions.

The proposed Transfer of Convicted Offenders (Enactment and Enforcement) Amendment Bill, 2026, is aimed at facilitating the transfer of convicted persons between Nigeria and countries with which it has relevant agreements.

The amendment would extend the framework to cover countries outside the Commonwealth, potentially broadening the scope of international cooperation in the transfer of convicted offenders.

Tinubu has urged the House of Representatives to expedite consideration of the proposed legislation.

The bill is expected to be considered by lawmakers as part of efforts to update the legal framework governing the transfer of convicted offenders between Nigeria and other countries.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, is expected to provide further details on the legislative process.
