BENIN CITY – Conscious of the rising incidence of global terrorism and the issue of safety, the Nigerian Postal Institute, Egor, Edo State has commenced a three day training workshop for senior Postal Managers on the need to property screen mails that pose risky to health, safety and environment if not properly handled.
Addressing participant at the workshop which ends today, the Post Master General who was represented by the Deputy Post Master General, counter operations, Dr. Samuel Emem said the workshop was based on the need to adhere to international practices, aside the need to train senior Managers, operations who have the capacity to train others.
He maintained that, “due to the growth of online shopping globally, many items and substances pass through the international and domestic mail pipelines which leads to incidents of dangerous goods or prohibited items in the mail stream, some of which could be explosive, flammable and non flammable gases or even poisonous gases.”
The workshop, Dr. Emem affirmed would give NIPOST Staff, stakeholders and its customers an opportunity to gain relevant knowledge and understanding of dangerous goods, their potential hazards and safety procedure applicable to their acceptance, processing and transportation.
A consultant in charge of the workshop, Mr. Clement Alabi stated that was meant to acquaint participants on issues of transfer of dangerous items and handling of air mails, the different categories and how to relate to explosives, gases, flammable liquids and peroxides, infectious substances and radio active materials as well as need to create awareness of what dangerous goods are and how to handle such if found. He sued for vigilance.
