Maiduguri – Despite the ravaging effects of the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in Nigeria’s North East Zone, the people of Maiduguri are still determined to preserve what is left of their moral rectitude’s as they came hard on the state government and security agencies over their perceived lethargic approach to dealing with cases of homosexuality in the state.
Coming under the aegis of a coalition of Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Truth for Peace, a group concerned with the promotion of good moral values and restoration of their esteemed cultural ethos, accused the States Director of Public Persecution (DPP) of not doing enough to bring to justice those found to have been engaged in the outlived practice.
The group spokesman, Mallam Abba Tukur also decried reported cases of suspects accused of engaging in gay practices escaping from police custodies and called for a change of attitude.
Mallam Abba recalled a particular case that happened in Gudu District where one Richardson Abhulimen, who was caught in the act and handed over to the police that was later said to have escaped from detention and nothing has been heard about his re-arrest or not.
It will be recalled that Mr. Richardson Abhulimen and his gay partner Ehikoya (aka Laloya) were arrested by a local vigilante group. The angry reaction to the incident had resulted in a mob action that led to the death of Ehikoya before the police came and rescued Abhulimen.
The group however called on the Borno State government to step up its fight against these moral decadent elements by ensuring their arrest and prosecution so that it would serve as deterrent to others who might want to engage in the illicit behavior.
