The Edo state police command in Benin city has said that it has Intensify efforts to rearrest a murder suspect identified as Igbineweka Elvis and two others who escaped from its custody.
The police at a press briefing in a statement in Benin city with journalists, said that the murder suspect who escaped on November 10,2015,had been charged to court for the murder of his colleague.
According to the statement, Igbineweka Elvis and his colleague ,Aigbovo Osarumen as carpenters were working at the roof top of a 3- storey building when the tragic incident occurred on September 2nd resulting in the death of Aigbovo Osarumen who according to eyewitness account fell from the roof top after he was pushed down during their struggle over working materials .
It further said that investigation by the police revealed that the suspect who was immediately apprehended and arrested after his colleague died instantly was charged to court for murder on September 25.
Meanwhile, witnesses present in court at the hearing of the case to testify against the suspect said that his actions deliberately led to the death of his colleague while they were working at the building site.
Igbineweka Elvis who was in court for hearing could not provide a witness to prove his case was said to have escaped from police custody after the second hearing of the case before judgement on November 20.
His escape from custody along with two others , according to the police is being investigated as a source in the police who pleaded anonymity said that he was of the opinion that the murder suspect was encouraged to abscond in a conspiracy aided by some officers.
According to the source who said ,”his escape happened so fast that another suspect was called out and all of a sudden this murder suspect came out and before everyone’ eyes he was gone.
“More disturbing was the fact that he did not only escape alone but with two others who were arrested for different crimes entirely,but I still think there is a grand conspiracy between some police officers and maybe his lawyer to aid his escape”the police source added.
The murder suspect,the Nigerian Observer was reliably informed by the police was faced with the prospect of conviction for murder as compelling evidence taken from witnesses were enough to earn him maximum life imprisonment for murder.
Preliminary reports into the murder revealed that the murder suspect and Aigbovo Osarumen had gone to complete the roofing work on the 3-storey building which 6 of them had started days earlier before the tragic incident at Egba community in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo state.
Meanwhile, the police have said that it was working in collaboration with other security operatives,local vigilante groups in the state to ensure the runway murder suspect, Igbineweka Elvis and two others identified as Johnson Efe and Okon Paul are rearrested while declaring all 3 suspects wanted.
