MRS. Sarah Jibril, the Special Adviser to the President on Ethics and Moral Values, has urged all politicians to promote national ethical values and morals for greater transformation of the Nigerian society..
Jibril gave the advice in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the forthcoming 4th National Ethics Day, scheduled for March 18 to 21.
The National Ethics Day, with the theme “Transforming the National Foundations by Ethics and Values for National Transformation and Development’’, aims at sustaining the legacy of national transformation through ethics and values.
The presidential adviser urged politicians to do all within their powers to stand out by setting good examples.
“Some politicians are having the right ethics but the situation is still unsatisfactory. The absence of ethics is the beginning of all our political, individual and national crises.
“The absence of ethics is the cause of growing insurgency, kidnapping, corruption and imprisonment of our children in other countries.
“Therefore, we have to accept it that we can change and transform our country. Other countries made it; Nigeria can equally make it because we are teachable, developable, workable and transformable.
“All parents, grandparents, traditional rulers and religious leaders should put heads together to decide autonomously on how we can transform ourselves.
“The promotion of ethics should also start from our homes. Parents and traditional rulers should also teach our children what is good.’’
Jubril explained that ethics was all about doing well, adding that with the right moral training, children would be guided by the fear of God.
She said that her office was striving to ensure that ethics and moral values were promoted in various areas of life, especially at the rural communities.
She said that the event would also focus on how to achieve discipline, integrity, dignity of labour, social justice, religious tolerance, self-reliance and patriotism in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Dr Goodluck Jonathan is expected to declare the day open.
As part of the event, a book presentation and exhibition will hold on March 18 and 19 while NGOs, international and government bodies as well as religious leaders, among others were expected at the event.
