ABUJA- Ahead of the rescheduled general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has met with security agencies to ensure hitch-free polls on March 28 and April 11 new dates.
The Inter-Agency Committee on Election Security (ICES) which held at INEC headquarters in Abuja was attended by military and paramilitary agencies.
Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu, told journalists that the meeting was part of the commission’s preparation for the elections.
Specifically, Idowu said that security issues on the elections were discussed at the meeting, which he described as ‘’operational and ongoing’’.
“It is a meeting that looked at specific area and considered the level of security risk, to determine high, medium or low risk areas.
“If it is high risk area, they considered how many police officers to be deployed to the area during the elections,’’ he said.
Kayode explained that ICES meeting did not consider whether an election would hold in an area or not.
“The meeting does not say whether election will hold in the North-East or not. They don’t take such decision; that is a policy decision,’’ he stated.
