…482 hectares of tappable plantations under cultivation

… develops high yielding, disease resistant clones

Dr. Lelia Dongo, the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rubber Research Institute of Nigeria, (RRIN) says the institute has been proactive and has contributed tremendously to the growth of the country’s rubber industry over the past five decades.

Dongo says PRIN’s contributions to the sector include the development of improved high yielding and disease resistant rubber clones, as well as increased rubber production in Nigeria, with 482 hectares of tappable rubber plantations under cultivation.

Dongo further attests that PRIN has contributed to an increase in Gum Arabic production in Nigeria, with 46 hectares of matured gum Arabic trees, the development of technology for processing of latex into various marketable products, the processing of rubber seed oil from rubber seeds, a raw material for cosmetics, paint, liquid soap, seed cake for animals and fertiliser and putty.

According to her, other successes include the development of an innovative approach in rubber agroforestry that promotes and contributes to food security, dissemination pathways for technology transfer to rubber farmers and stakeholders, market research to assess demand for rubber products domestically and internationally, as well as policy recommendations to the government and other stakeholders in the rubber industry.

She further assured that RRIN remains committed to spearheading research, fostering innovation and contributing to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

Dongo was speaking at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the institute at Iyanomo, Benin City on December 14, 2023.

She added that from pioneering research initiatives to fostering sustainable practices, RRIN has been at the forefront of transforming the rubber landscape.

She assured that PRIN was committed to innovation and continuity and looked looked forward to a future filled with new possibilities.

She described the golden jubilee anniversary as a momentous occasion symbolising not just the passage of time, but the continuous pursuit of excellence and progress in research development in the rubber industry.

“Today’s event is more than a celebration, it is a reflection of five decades of tireless dedication, research, innovation and contribution to the rubber industry. It is an opportunity to acknowledge and honour the journey that has brought us here, a journey marked by challenges met with resilience, discovery fuelled by curiosity, and advancement driven by a shared vision.

“As we stand on the precipice of a new era for RRIN, I use this moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, partners, stakeholders and collaborators who have been part of our story and instrumental to our success.

“Your unwavering support has been the driving force behind our accomplishment and we are thankful for the trust and camaraderie that has defined our collaboration”, she noted.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security Aliu Abdulahi, who was represented by , Iwara Bassey, Director of Food Production, said the institute has played a pivotal role by advancing research, innovation and sustainable practices in the rubber industry.

Bassey noted that the institute has been a beacon of excellence and has made significant contribution to the growth and resilience of Nigeria’s rubber sector.

He urged stakeholders to continue to support the Institute in its mission to enhance productivity, promote sustainability and contribute positively to the overall landscape of the agricultural sector.

The minister said in the face of evolving challenges, the institute has adapted and thrived, showcasing resilience and the spirit of continuous improvement.
