… Urges public vigilance, safety measures
BY EDENIYERE ABRAHAM OSOSE
The Edo State Government has expressed sorrow over the death of Master Nathan Spencer, a young schoolboy who lost his life in a recent flood incident in the Uselu area of Egor Local Government
Area.
During a condolence visit to the bereaved family, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr Paddy Iyamu, who represented Governor Monday Okpebholo, described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken, not only the family, but the entire state.
Dr Iyamu was joined by officials from the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), including the Director of Operation Engineer Mike Aigbokhan, and the leadership of Egor Local Government Council.
He noted that the late Nathan was a promising child whose life was cut short in avoidable circumstances.
According to the report, the pupil had been taken outside his neighbourhood to a private school to write an examination when the flooding occurred.
The Governor, through his representative, cautioned parents to make safety-conscious decisions, especially during the rainy season, and assured that the State Government remains committed to strengthening its emergency response capacity.
Speaking during the visit, the Executive Secretary of EdoSEMA, Hon. Jerry Idahosa, underscored the importance of public awareness and patience during rainfall, especially in flood-prone areas like Uselu.
He explained that most floods in such areas are short-lived and advised residents to delay movement when necessary to avoid unnecessary risk.
He also warned against the persistent problem of indiscriminate waste disposal, which continues to clog drainage channels and exacerbate flooding.
According to him, EdoSEMA was actively collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and the Waste Management Board to promote better environmental practices across communities.
Hon. Idahosa emphasised that the agency’s presence at the condolence visit was part of its emergency response duty and a show of solidarity with the grieving family.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to sustained public engagement to prevent further loss of life.
Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Hon. Ighodalo Kelvin Eguakun, echoed the call for vigilance, urging residents to refrain from walking or driving through floodwaters, particularly during the early hours of the day.
He noted that the Council had intensified efforts to clear drainage systems and maintain critical infrastructure, but requires the active cooperation of residents.
He appealed to parents and pupils to exercise caution and wait for floodwaters to recede before leaving home.
In an emotional response, Nathan’s father, Mr Paul Spencer, expressed gratitude to the state and local government officials for their concern and solidarity.
He said that the family was devastated by the loss, but found comfort in the government’s show of support.
