BENIN CITY: The Edo Art and Cultural Heritage Institute (EACHI) has expressed full support for the decision of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, rejecting the installation of an Iyaloja in the Benin Kingdom.
In a statement signed by Okpioba Osaro Idemudia (Olotu), EACHI said it aligns completely with the monarch’s position that the Iye-Eki remains the only traditionally recognized head of markets in the Benin Kingdom.
The institute described the Oba’s decision as a reaffirmation of the long-standing cultural and traditional market leadership structure, emphasizing that the Iye-Eki holds a revered place in Benin’s heritage.
“Any attempt to impose external leadership structures that contradict our cultural norms and traditions undermines the rich heritage of the Benin people,” the statement said.
EACHI commended Oba Ewuare II for his steadfast commitment to protecting and preserving Benin’s cultural values and traditions. It also called on all Edo people, both at home and in the diaspora, to rally in support of the monarch’s decision.
The institute further applauded Edo market women for what it described as their “bold stand against the imposition of Iyaloja,” adding that their action demonstrates loyalty to the throne and respect for Benin’s traditional institutions.
EACHI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and safeguarding the cultural identity of the Edo people through continuous advocacy and education.
