Kanem (Plateau)  – Prof. Alhassan Gali, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Federal University Kashere, has urged Plateau youths to embrace western education to enable them contribute to growth of the society.

Gali, who is also the Director, Nigerian Maritime Academy, made the appeal on Sunday at Gum-Gagdi village of Kanem Local Government at an event hosted by Ibrahim Kafi Philanthropic Foundation.

The don reminded youths of the area on the need to prepare themselves academically to be in tandem with the present realities in the ever growing world.

”Our society of today has greatly advanced and is fast developing, and without education, no one can achieve any meaningfully progress.

”I am not talking of our aged parent anymore because their time is now in the past, but I am referring to the youths, our leaders of today.

”I am a professor today because I went to school and endured all the hardships that went with it; I didn’t stay at home and became a professor.

”So, education, no matter how little you might think it is, goes a long way to define your personality, that of your family and the society at large; it develops the society,” he said.

The don further admonished the youths not to use poverty or the ignorance of their parents as an excuse not to get themselves educated, saying that posterity and future generation will not spare them if they remained uneducated.

He charged the youths to desist from any act that would pose set-backs to the growth and development of the society.

Earlier, the head of the foundation, Ibrahim Kafi, said the focus was to bring succour to the less privileged.

“This foundation started these activities since 1998 and later it became an annual event where relief materials are distributed to the less privileged

”It is aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of the have-nots by providing succor in form of food items, clothing and financial assistance to my people here and in neighboring communities.

”I am not doing this because I will someday come back to ask them to vote me into any political office, but ‘am doing it because, as a Christian, my Bible tells me to care for the needy in the society,” he said.

The chairman of the occasion and Deputy Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, Yusuf Gagdi, said the act of charity being rendered by the donor was a challenge to public office holders.

”Today I am not only challenged, but I am also reminded that as I enjoy everything attached to being a public office holder, I should always remember that there are those who can’t afford one square meal a day.

”So, I urge all those who have the means to always remember the poor in the society; nothing is too little or too much in doing the act of charity,” he said.
