There was a fire outbreak that affected a section of the popular Balogun market in Lagos State today. Reports from many sources especially traders at the market say that goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the fire incident.

The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

The Nigeria Police has cordoned off the area while the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), are on ground to extinguish the inferno.

According to the update provided by Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, DG/CEO Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA, a section of the building has collapsed due to intense heat.

He said: “Fire Incident at Balogun Market, Lagos Island. LASEMA Response Unit LRU, Lagos State Fire Service and Federal Fire Service are at the scene combating the fire.

“A section of the burnt building collapsed from the intense heat. LASEMA Cappa Base commander Engr. Jamiu Salami, Deputy Director LASG Fire Service Mr. Olajide Ogabi and Lagos Coordinator National Emergency Management Agency NEMA Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye coordinating response activities at the incident scene.”

Today’s fire outbreak will be the second fire incident in March 2023 after another market, a spare parts market, was completely razed down in the first week of March 2023 in the state.
